What is Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan®?

Isn't Tang Soo Do and Soo Bahk Do the same?

Tang Soo Do is not the same as Soo Bahk Do®.
The Tang Soo Do martial art system developed by Hwang Kee was an early precursor to his more advanced Soo Bahk Do® martial art system developed years later.
Moo Duk Kwan® martial art school Founder Hwang Kee taught an early iteration of his martial art system and philosophy under the name "Tang Soo Do." Later he modified the contents of his system and coined the name "Soo Bahk Do®" to identify his unique martial art system and philosophy being taught in all authorized Moo Duk Kwan® martial art schools worldwide. His Soo Bahk Do® martial art system encompassed the content and attributes of his previous Tang Soo Do martial art system and was expanded and enhanced to include a significant amount of new content.
The Soo Bahk Do® martial art system is a living art that continues to evolve under the guidance of the Moo Duk Kwan President, H.C. Hwang, Kwan Jang Nim.

In short
SOO BAHK DO® (“Way of the Striking Hand”) is a traditional Korean martial art with historical roots that date back thousands of years. A holistic art, it balances both “hard style” striking hand techniques and powerful kicking with soft “internal” breathing exercises, as well as grappling and self-defense practice. It was originally known as “Tang Soo Do,” a name retained by practitioners who left the original Moo Duk Kwan®(“School of Martial Virtue”) organization.

What is the Moo Duk Kwan®?

Moo Duk Kwan is the name of the organization which teaches practitioners comprehensive techniques of the Korean martial art named Soo Bahk Do. Translated as the “Institute of Martial Virtue”, Moo Duk Kwan was founded by the Grandmaster Hwang Kee in 1945. Moo Duk Kwan was created under the influence of ancient Korean fighting techniques, especially  Soo Bahk Ki. As a worldwide organization, Moo Duk Kwan sets out to maintain high quality of martial arts education and mental development of their practitioners. Today, numerous schools certified by the international organization teach Moo Duk Kwan. This martial art technique split into two groups, one including Soo Bahk Do, formerly Tang Soo Do, while the other branch, Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo, merged with eight other Kwans and formed Taekwondo.

The Moo Duk Kwan® martial art school's high standards for philosophical understanding, technical excellence and rigorous quality controls stand behind every Moo Duk Kwan® rank certification.

The Moo Duk Kwan® organization founded by Hwang Kee in Yang San Ku, South Korea in 1945 promotes the authentic instruction of the Soo Bahk Do® martial art system through Instructors and Schools that it certifies and licenses to display federally registered trade marks.
